A few days ago I found myself talking to the mother of one of my friends. She'd not seen me for a while and so came out with a question that I'm getting used to answering. 'Have you lost more weight?' I was asked. After giving a positive reply the inevitable follow up question came my way - 'How do you do it?' At this point I declined the invitation to plug Year Of The Diet as I'm not entirely sure that wading through 9 months of blog articles would come up with a satisfactory answer to the question. Instead I summarised in a single word what I think has been the secret to my success. Persistence.
Throughout this process I've been trying to identify what works for me, and persist with that formula. It is all very well just saying eat less, exercise more, but if you don't find a sustainable diet plan for yourself or discover something that makes you want to pull on your sweatshirt and cause yourself pain, it is unlikely that the success you crave will be forthcoming.
On the food front, I've kept things simple. Cereal for breakfast, a large but light lunch and a proper sized dinner. Alcohol restricted to a couple of drinks on a Saturday night. Takeout restricted to a once in a while treat. Minimal snacking between meals and of course Subway is dead to me. I'll admit that there are days when there is quite severe deviation from the plan. Only a couple of days ago I had what is best described as an "off-day". My little one delivered a rude awakening at 4am and decided that he was not in the mood to allow me to go back to sleep. I thought middle of the night feeds were well behind us but on this occasions it was a question of needs must. I conked out on the lounge floor some time around 5.30 before my eldest came down at 7 wanting breakfast and getting ready for school. What followed during the morning was a recipe of crisps, biscuits, yoghurt, before eventually my compulsion to eat ended after a monster 6-egg omelette filled with mushrooms, green and red peppers and spinach for lunch. For the rest of the afternoon I enjoyed that mega bloated feeling!
Despite the off-day, things will get back to normal. My diet thus far has worked and for it to continue to be effective, I must persist.
The same goes for exercise. I have to remind myself from time to time that I am still very much a novice when it comes to running and learning as I go. Last Saturday I got things pretty wrong with my 5k. Pre-race I was talking to one of my office colleagues about work and the discussion got me thinking in such a negative manner that when it came time to set off, I was angry. Rather than harness this and channel my frustration at recent events into a positive force, I rather erupted and set off at what for me is an unsustainable pace. The net result was a very demoralising last 3500 metres and while I still got round completing the course in a decent time, I was left feeling pretty disappointed with how the run had gone. The following morning, rather than take up the welcome option to head back to bed for an hour of catch-up sleep, I instead opted for a run around Slough Industrial Estate, deliberately pacing myself with a view to find a rhythm I could work with. And while my run ended well before my intended finish due to fatigue (running back to back days not ideal) I proved to myself that I could do this.
When I got to Black Park yesterday morning I was determined to have a better run. I opted to leave my headphones at home. I didn't bother with the RunKeeper app. With the 10k only a couple of weeks away I had this marked down as a training run in which I could go along comfortably rather than chase a PB. It was just me against the course, albeit with about 350 or so other people. Setting off at a steady and measured pace, I soon found myself running alongside a ParkRun veteran, with more than 250 runs under her belt and someone I have found overtaking me towards the end of most of my runs to date when I have been wilting. I decided at that point to use her as my pacesetter, and for the first couple of kilometres let her dictate my pace. All was going well and I felt that I was running somewhat within myself. Usually between the 2nd and 3rd km markers I find myself slowing to walking pace to catch my breath. Not this time though. Feeling good I decided to up the pace a little and run my own race, leaving the pacesetter behind. For the first time I completed the circuit without walking and my reward for running non-stop was slicing 23 seconds off my personal best, breaking 26 minutes to boot. I clocked 25:57, more than 4 minutes quicker than my first effort a couple of months ago. Had I kept running alongside the veteran, I'd have finished just outside my PB, so probably just as well I changed tactics.
The time was an added bonus to be honest. I hadn't set out to run a PB, but it came to me as a result of my running persistence. The most pleasing aspect was that at the end of the race I felt really good and could have run for quite a while longer which bodes well for the 10k. I need to get out and do a longer training run this week to give me a better idea of what to expect, but things are pointing in the right direction.
This week could see me hit my target weightloss. If I don't quite manage it, I know that sooner or later I will. Persistence has been the key to my success to date, and persistence will be key to achieving future goals too.
My name is Graham. I spent 2013 trying to lose weight with some success. In 2014 I ran 2 half marathons before piling weight back on. In 2015 I aim to slim back down. Follow my progress

Wednesday Weigh-In - 11 September
One week into this daddy day care gig and I think it is time to take stock of how things are going. Heading into my additional paternity leave there was several things that caused me concern which could have had a negative impact upon the diet. Firstly, losing my regular access to a gym. Secondly, losing a daily routine. Thirdly, boredom leading to the fridge.
On all three counts I have to say so far so good. I do miss the buzz of hitting the treadmill in my lunch break but I can't really say that I've been lacking in exercise. Like a geek I measured out the route to my son's school using the RunKeeper app, and it told me that it is 1.04km. Multiply that by 4 for two return journeys per day and multiply the sum by 5, and that means in a typical school week I will now be covering 21km on foot. With a pushchair no less. It is a different sort of workout to what I'd get through 20-25 minutes three times a week at the gym, but certainly not to be sniffed at. Throw in my regular 5k doing the Saturday morning parkrun, and an additional run I managed on Sunday to help with my 10k training, and you could easily argue I'm more active now than when in work.
Going from a regular routine of breakfast-work-gym/lunch-work-home to a blank page could have been challenging. As it has turned out, the lack of routine has just meant creating a new one. Getting both boys ready for the trip to school. Identifying windows to give baby his meals and tend to his medical needs. Picking up after school and getting the boys fed and ready for bed.
With all of that there has been little time for boredom. A spot of gardening, doing laundry and a bit of hoovering help pass the time during days when I've not organised anything else. I've had coffee mornings with a former housemate and former colleague. Pottering to the local shop and library. The only day where I've noticeably consumed more than usual was on Saturday when as usual I was famished after doing the 5k and plundered the Walkers multibag.
So with my initial fears allayed, how are things going on the diet front? Well, with boredom alleviated, and gym trips subbed for schoolrun on foot, I certainly wasn't expecting to gain weight over the last 7 days. The scales for the last two Wednesday mornings have told me I am 15st 10lbs. This morning they told me this.
The weightloss continues. I'm so close to my target of 15st 7lbs I can almost taste it. 40lbs down, 1lb to go. Another good week and hopefully I'm hitting that mark. So much of my motivation for losing weight this year has revolved around my boys. It would be a nice way to reach my goal with a little helping hand from the daily school walks with them both.

Wednesday Weigh-In 21 August
A relatively quiet week on the blog front means this is my first post since the last weigh-in. What has been happening in the meantime? Well, I had what I'd call my most 'relaxed' weekend in a while. After a family picnic at Ruislip Lido, where I ventured back towards bread and consumed a couple of pork pies to boot, we ate out in the evening. Now, try as you might to make things better for yourself, you know before you step foot in a Toby Carvery that you will be leaving somewhat less healthy. Even with only opting for 2 roast potatoes and filling my plate with cabbage and cauliflower, I could see my Saturday morning run being scrubbed from history at the food counter. Worse still, because we had vouchers for free ice cream and not everybody wanted one, I ended up eating about two and a half portions. Not great behaviour from somebody wanting to lose weight!
Having let my guard down somewhat on Saturday, I found Sunday a struggle and couldn't help but eat a bit more than I needed to have done. A Cornetto from the freezer. A couple of cake bars. A packet of my 4yr old's 'Animal Biscuits'. I was feeling tired from the day before and adding sugar seemed liked a good idea at the time. Except that it never is as you then struggle with the rest of the day as your body pines for more sugar when levels go down. It filtered into my Monday as well and I felt pretty awful at work. I did manage to keep to my diet and just about survived a trip to the gym, but in the evening I surrendered to a large vanilla Onken Biopot which didn't last very long. There are worse things that can be eaten admittedly, but even so, I've come to expect a little bit better of myself.
The Saturday morning run didn't quite go according to plan either. It was always going to happen that I would stop setting PBs and my little run of success came to an end this weekend. After a somewhat slow start in which I got rather boxed in at the start, I used up a bit too much energy getting past people and making up for lost time. RunKeeper clocked my second km at 4m45s which is sub-24 minute pace. Subsequently I struggled during the middle stages of the race, ran out of puff and laboured to a finishing time of 27.04. This was only 13 seconds slower than my best time on the course so strictly speaking not bad, but I was disappointed with how the run went and know there is plenty of room for improvement.
I rather proved my point with that in the gym yesterday. Having been annoyed with myself for my eating over the weekend, and for a pretty pointless session on the treadmill on Monday, I focused on my job at hand and decided it was time I ran 5k in 25 minutes. Barring the first minute when I'm walking at 7kph pace to get the machine up to speed and enter numbers into the computer, I ran the distance at a consistent 12kph for the first 4k, stepping up to 13k and sprinting at 17k to round of the last km. 5k covered in a shade under 25 minutes. If I could replicate that outdoors, I'd be a very happy bunny.
So where am I today with the weigh-in? Well in spite of my weekend excess, I've managed to drop 2lbs. 16st1lb last week, 15st13lb today. Two and a half stone lost since January 2nd and just 6lbs to shed before I reach my target of 15st 7lb. It is taking a while but I'm getting there!
Finally, I received a pat on the back from an unexpected source at the weekend. My sister and I like all siblings prefer to engage in banter rather that directly offer one another praise. So to receive a public commendation on Saturday night as I did came as a bit of a surprise. True it was delivered as a back-handed compliment, but I'd expect nothing less. Thanks Sis!

Wednesday Weigh-In 7 August
This weekend marks five very happy years of marriage. Although my goal for the year was to get down to wedding day weight, I am a touch disappointed that I've not managed to hit that target by the time of our anniversary. Still, hopefully my other half will accept me as I am - she puts up with most of my other faults!
The Wednesday Weigh-In has been kind for the third week running. Last week the scales balanced at 16st 4lb. This week there is another small loss. Slow and consistent, it isn't exactly a thrilling way to lose weight but it is effective. It just feels like a whole lot more work is going into shifting 1lb than it was earlier in the process. The fact that the scales keep moving though is good. It is so much less motivating when things don't happen.
My running continues to go well. Last Saturday I had hoped to dip under 28 minutes having run 28:02 the week before. Imagine my surprise then when I not only managed to do that but also went into sub-27 minute territory, finishing in 26:52. I knew the time was going to be pretty quick, based on using the RunKeeper app for the first time doing the 5k. I didn't quite set it up right however, so the GPS didn't work. This had a somewhat negative effect in that the phone told me every five minutes that I had run 0km at 0km/h. Fortunately enough the 5 minute intervals came about at times when I was passing the 1km, 2km and 3km markers, which meant I knew I was running closer to gym pace. This meant that even with the last 2k going a touch slower, I was going to break my previous best. It was very satisfying when the official result came through and I had indeed smashed it.
I may have been getting a little carried away with the ParkRun lark, as I found myself on Saturday night looking for locations near to where I'll be going for a short break with my family. While my enthusiasm to keep going and striving to improve my fitness is admirable, my wife was right to point out that putting a run ahead of family time while we're away is not the right priority. So it looks like I'll be having a Saturday morning off!
On the weightloss front, I'm going to have to show patience. Getting under 16st is tantalisingly close but yet it may take a while to get under. Still, I'd much rather be where I am now that I was a couple of months back, seeing the numbers going the wrong way and minimal exercise taking place, It is strange to think that less than three months ago I hadn't been on a treadmill for a couple of years. Now I'm a regular 5k runner. Quite amazing what you can make your body do when you put your mind to it.

Coe, Cram and Ovett have nothing on me!
Call it sibling rivalry if you want, but having read my sister's article on this blog yesterday, I felt compelled to pull on my running shoes. This morning I paced the mean streets of Britwell - well, a small part of it anyway - and did my first outdoor run since I was a teenager.
A couple of years back when I was a regular at the gym I was able to spend quite a bit of time on a treadmill, but doing that in a controlled environment is very different to running in the elements, particularly if like me you have asthma. That was a contributory factor in my 'run' this morning lasting not very long, though 95% of the reason was because I'm hideously unfit. However, it is a start and a foundation to build upon.
My asthma played up and a few hours later I'm still coughing and spluttering at regular intervals. Looks like I've got a lot of work to do if I'm going to get myself fit for a 10k this year. However, after spending the last few weeks gaining weight and eating like a pig, it was good to do something positive and try to get Year of the Diet back on track.

Every step counts
I'll be perfectly honest. Right now the diet isn't top of my priorities. Living with a 5 week old with nocturnal tendencies rather kicks the stuffing out of you, and getting through the working day without my colleagues finding me snoring away at my desk is becoming more and more of a challenge. Inevitably therefore I am breaking somewhat from the three round meals a day plan and introducing the occasional snack to keep my brain ticking over. However, I've also started taking steps to counterbalance this.
The lunchtime stroll is becoming a regular feature, when the weather permits. To help track progress in this area, I've enlisted the help of an app called RunKeeper. This is essentially a clever bit of kit for fitness freaks to track their runs, but for the less physically actively like myself there is a setting included which covers walking. Enter your weight, and it makes an educated prediction of how many calories you burn in relation to the speed and distance travelled.
So, as you'll gather from the image above, today I walked a touch over 2 miles, burning just over 300 calories, all comfortably within the timeframe of my lunch break. Shortly after I finished this I received a nice email from the app informing me I'd broken my record for calories burned and average speed.
Other features in the app include a map tracking your journey, stored details of previous activities and it even has preset training plans to help you prepare for things like 10Ks, marathons etc. I'm not sure it has a plan set up for me and my sponsored walk next month, but if I ever get my running shoes on it will be good to have this option to help me prepare for a race.
I downloaded RunKeeper for free from Google Play and I believe it is also available for iPhone. Check it out as it is a useful addition to your smartphone, and helped me justify eating a few apples this afternoon!
