Wednesday Weigh-In - 5 June

Having been completely on the ball with my diet over the past 7 days, I would have been pretty annoyed if I hadn't seen positive movement on the scales this morning. I have to say I am pleased to have been rewarded for my efforts. Last week the scales read 17st 6lb. Today, well you can see for yourselves.

Going to start with a 16 next week!
All that talk about going back to the primitive was put into action. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. No alcohol. Barely a snack (I treated myself to a Smarties ice cream from the freezer on Sunday night for having got through the rest of the weekend intact). Add in more exercise than I'd done the previous month and the standard diet formula of eat less sweat more has proven very effective.

To move forward from here, I can't rest on my laurels. Proving I can stick to a diet for 1 week is fine in the short term, but my long term goal is still way off in the distance. I need to build upon this success and ensure I apply the same principles next week and the weeks to come. I know that it is unlikely I will replicate the same dramatic weightloss every time, but I'm motivated by the longer game rather than instant results.

Immediate challenges on the horizon present themselves in the form of a networking event this afternoon in London (will I have a drink, won't I? No chance to hit the gym today) plus my nephew has a birthday and I'm off to a BBQ and I've never yet been able to manage to ration myself sensibly when there are plates of charcoaled meat to consume.

However, enough about the future. I will take a moment or two to feel smug for meeting what I set out to achieve this week. The diet is back with a vengeance, and this time I'm not going to let things slip.

One day at a time

Yesterday marked the re-launch of my diet. 24 hours in and so far so good. I stuck to three meals a day, avoided snacks and went to the gym. Repeat again today and I'll be a happy man.

I did think twice about whether or not to have a naan bread last night to accompany my curry, but in the end decided it was a no brainer. I did. A few weeks down the line when I'm hopefully a few pounds lighter I'll be looking to cut down on my evening meal but for now it is my main source of energy and needs to be robust, particularly if I'm planning to hit the treadmill every day. Yes, it was 450 calories or so that I could have done without, but small steps are required to avoid crashing and burning yet again.

So here I am looking to go again and make things routine. I've had my Shredded Wheat, my cup-a-soup is ready to go and my gym bag is taking up my footspace under my desk. Sometime later today the first hunger pangs are likely to kick in when my body begins to recognise that it won't be getting topped up with sugary badness. That'll be when my willpower will be tested.

The fact is I'm a lot bigger than I want to be right now. Maybe not as big as the chap in the screenshot below, but enough to feel unhealthy and for my clothes to be noticeably tighter than they were just a few weeks ago. I got rid of my 2XL & 3XL t-shirts a couple of years back and I've no intention of having to buy them again. Best stick with it then.

Wednesday Weigh-In 29 May

So, let's do this with minimal spin. I'm ballooning!

Don't blame the scales
The number on the bathroom scales is not unfriendly. It is a fair reflection of the fact I've been letting things go for a number of weeks now. Almost five months into Year Of The Diet and my net weightloss is 1 stone. My aim for the year was 41 lbs. After a promising start, things have regressed pretty badly of late, and that is entirely down to me.

I could write about new beginnings. Picking up the pieces. Whatever cliche takes your fancy. Ultimately weight management is my own personal responsibility. I know how I've lost weight before, and I know only too well how easy it is to gain. The phrase I'm going to go with is Back to the Primitive - a nice little track by Soulfly which I plan to listen to every morning to offer motivation - which is essentially what I need to do.

Consume less. Exercise more. Lose weight.

A very simple equation. A pity that it is so much easier to do the reverse.

So, with today being my first at getting Back to the Primitive, my day so far has included Shredded Wheat, Cup-A-Soup and 30 minutes of huffing and puffing on a treadmill. A pretty sight it does not make but needs must.

Reach for the inhaler people - it is wheeze o'clock
I enjoyed my Magners last night, but that was the last drop of alcohol I plan to consume for at least the next three weeks. Remove that, the muffins, the cheeky bags of crisps, the slide of bread while cooking dinner and all the various little extras and I'll be on my way.

Wednesday Weigh-in - 10 April

Despite the biscuits episode on Monday, things have moved in the right direction. As the picture shows below, I've sneaked back under 17st.

Poorly taken photo - in a hurry this morning!
I suppose I should be happy about this. A few days of porridge eating sandwiching the bad days have helped to lose some of the Easter excess. But here is the thing; I am currently heavier than I was at the start of March. I want to be making progress towards my long term goal rather than seeing my weight jump up and down on a weekly basis. For this to happen, I need to get things back under control for a sustained period.

The first steps to achieve this have already been taken. I've not had a drink since Easter Sunday. My plan is to have a dry Easter, which may get extended into May, though a trip to a Haven caravan park and its evening entertainment will likely put an end to that. The sheer thought of Music Mania and Anxious the Elephant has got me itching for an overpriced watered down pint. Back on point, the next step is to cleanse my mind of the sort of food I've been supplementing my diet with in recent weeks. Cake and chocolate are dead to me!

I actually bought some doughnuts today. I didn't get them for me, but for somebody special who'd had a frustrating day and was in need of a sugar rush. At no point did I even consider having one for myself. This is quite a difference from 48 hours ago when I physically couldn't stop myself eating cheap Lidl biscuits.

Moving forward, I have to get back my pigheaded stubborn streak that abjectly refuses food outside of my diet plan. It is what works for me and I know I can do it. Mind over matter is what will decide if my long term goals are achieved. Let the mentals games begin.

The weekend starts here

It is Friday night and after several days of getting back into the dieting groove, inevitably things are becoming a little more difficult. For most of the afternoon I've been trying to keep my mind from thoughts of take out and cold beers, and writing this now I'm pleased to report I've stayed away from both, but I know that the rest of the weekend will present its challenges. A working day provides distraction; a weekend at home means 48 hours of temptation.

I've kickstarted life into my diet by entering a post-Easter detox. Nutritionists would likely disapprove but I've been living off porridge. Not in the three meals a day sense, but close enough. Porridge for breakfast. Porridge for lunch. Proper dinner in the evening. Believe me by the time I get to eat at night I am ravenous! This is just a short term measure, to get thing rolling but it is quite effective and given how bitterly cold the weather has been this week, three hot meals a day has been very welcome.

How things will pan out this weekend I'm not too sure. Staying away from my 4 year old's Easter Eggs should be straightforward enough, but the lagers in the fridge and the Pringles in the cupboard may be harder to resist. One thing is for sure, if I do give in to temptation, I'll have spent the last three days wasting my time with Oat So Simple. Wish me luck.

Love your mother, loathe their cooking

A Sunday roast consisting of roast beef, roast...

It has been a while since my last entry. Getting to grips to parenthood the second time around has been somewhat tricky, with the little one demonstrating nocturnal instincts. With time and energy diverted to getting through the day by any means necessary, both the diet and this blog have taken something of a backseat. I'm pleased to say though that my little nightowl appears to be warming to the idea of sleeping at a more respectable time for his daddy, and so I'm hoping to get things going again.

A restart after a week of Easter eating is not dissimilar to where things began in January after the excess of Christmas. I've enjoyed letting my hair down with a few drinks, inevitable chocolate and general unhealthy stuff and now I'm ready to focus on getting back to basics and get closer towards my target weightloss.

Over the past week, I've enjoyed the very best of comfort food. Nothing hits the mark better for me than a good old fashioned roast dinner. Given recent events and the preceding weeks of diet, I've not enjoyed a Sunday roast for some time, but then just like buses two came along at one. Last weekend I devoured my mother's very best roast lamb. It was always my favourite growing up and now that I get to taste it on fewer occasions, I really can't help myself when the opportunity presents itself. Needless to say, I finished my plate and went back for afters. Self-restraint just wasn't an option. I then went on to help myself to pudding. Lots of it. Not a good day for a diet but utterly satisfying.

On Easter Sunday, I was served another delicious roast lamb dinner, this time courtesy of my mother-in-law with a very similar outcome. My trousers are feeling a little tighter as a result! I've written before about the perils of social eating. Having exhibited utter failure to reign in my appetite in the face of Sunday roasts, I've come to the conclusion that to successfully diet, love your mother, but if you can't give in to temptation, loathe their cooking or at least avoid it!

Staring in the face of temptation

Dieting is all about choices. Do I go with my planned lunch or lean towards that tempting pile of sweet stuff over there?

Wednesday Weigh-In - 30 January

Yesterday I wasn't sure of what to expect from the scales today. Over the course of my last few posts, the theme has been doom and gloom, annoyed with myself for letting things slip with a few hefty meals over the weekend.

I don't know how it has read to you, but all my pontificating has probably placed me close to the diva in the snickers advert.

And so here I am on a Wednesday reporting on my latest weigh in and feel something of a fraud. I've not gained weight, nor have I stayed the same. I'm 3 lbs lighter than I was this time last week.

That is 16lbs gone in total in 4 weeks. A fantastic start to the year and something to build on in the coming months.

February will present challenges. In less that two weeks I'll become a dad for the second time. In normal circumstances that is enough to dispense with regular eating habits, but as those of you who are close to me will already know, there are some difficult days ahead.

I'm therefore very pleased with my progress to date which will allow some breathing space over the next month on the diet front. I plan to eat as healthily as possible, but will only be able to do so where practical.

Still another 12 days left before life changes. 12 more days to keep up the good work.

Yesterday don't mean......

That was the weekend that was. I'm quite disappointed in myself for letting things slip, but I'm determined that I am going to put things behind me and get back to what has worked for me so far. Diet discipline with sensible meals. Already though I can feel it is going to be tough day. I'm feeling hungry which stands to reason given my stomach will have expanded through the weekend.

This rather brings home that dieting isn't something that I can turn on or off at the flick of a switch. It also serves as a reminder that with all the will and motivation in the world, external factors can and will affect my ability to reach my goals. I can't control those, and there will be days to come in the very near future where I may need to seek out comfort food to help get me from one day to the next. But what I can do is make sure that on better days, I'm in control and working towards where I want to be.

With that in mind, I'm putting this past weekend behind me. I can't change the fact I ate poorly but I can ensure that the week starts off on the right foot. Bran flakes this morning. Lots of water. Lunch to follow. More water. Simple dinner tonight. It sounds so easy typing it out. Just a small matter of psychological battles to win along the way.

To use musical metaphors, where I want to be right now is Nina Simone Feeling Good.

It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good

However, where I am today is more akin to Pantera's Yesterday Don't Mean Shit

Cause yesterday don't mean shit
What's over is over and nothing between
Yesterday don't mean shit
Because tomorrow's the day you have to face
There's no rewinding time
Yesterday don't mean shit
Yesterday don't mean shit

Both songs are about forgetting the past and recognising that things start afresh from today. One is quite beautiful, the other an ugly snarling record grimacing through gritted teeth. That is certainly where I'm at with my diet today. I'm going to win this battle, but it sure as hell isn't going to be pretty.

Choices, choices

Life is full of choices. Do you got outside and play in the snow, or do you stay inside nice and warm? Do you tidy the house when you know you really need to or do you decide to put it off for another day. The big topic of conversation in my household at 8am on a Saturday was do we go with Peppa Pig, Fireman Sam or Looney Toons? There are always choices. Always an alternative.

The same is true of dieting, and the choices that you make will be a determining factor in whether or not you are successful. My choice so far has taken advantage of my 'all or nothing' mentality and distance myself from snacks and sweet stuff. I know that once I get a taste for chocolate, cake or crisps I'll be looking for more. And then some more. And before I know it, I'll have abandoned diet mode and started to reverse the losses of the last two weeks.

Some people have better self restraint than me. They can have a little bit of something nice from time to time and not let it interfere with their weightloss plans. I am somewhat envious of them, but I know what works for me and where my weaknesses lie. So in the face of temptation, my attitude is to politely decline the opportunity.

That situation arose yesterday at work. One of my colleagues was having their final day before moving off to pastures new, and inevitably there was a bit of a leaving do planned, starting with our traditional office lunchtime buffet. We have some sensational amateur bakers in our midst. One had made a to die for cake while the other had made a gorgeous collection of cupcakes. Throw in a huge amount of savoury goods and the challenge was set. Do I tuck in or do I abstain?

The PCC Buffet - What would you do?
In the end, the snowfall took the decision out of my hands, as I had to leave work early to collect my son from his nursery which was closing early due to the adverse weather conditions. However, I had every intention of taking a look but don't touch policy. My humble lunch of ham, rocket and coleslaw wrap would have done nicely (as it did later when I eventually got home) and not broken my diet.

My choice is to take the steps necessary to achieve long-term weightloss. If that means deferring on a raft of sweet temptations, so be it.

My contracting waistline

The first two weeks of the diet have gone well.  Yesterday's weigh-in produced a second positive reading in as many weeks and in addition to the proverbial pat on the back I've been receiving from friends who have been following my progress, there has also been something else to warm the soul on this chilly winter's day.

I've been able to drop a waist size and am back into my 40in trousers. Satisfying though it is to see the bathroom scales going backwards, I find nothing more rewarding from putting myself through a diet than being able to see and feel that my endeavours are paying off. This morning I put away the cheap pair of jeans that I acquired so spare my blushes after splitting my work trousers just before Christmas. If all goes well I won't need to wear them ever again.

Dropping a waist size can be met with a bit of retail therapy if you haven't got any smaller clothes. I won't be rushing out to the shops any time soon as I have plenty of t-shirts and trousers in my wardrobe that I'm looking forward to wearing again. At one stage I had jeans in every size between 34-48, following my big diet that started in 2007. I found it very cathartic to pack up the big-sized clothes and take them to a local charity shop. Little did I know at that point I was about to balloon again and be forced back into the bigger clothes.

Nice though it is to know my waist has shrunk, I'm not going to get carried away. 40in jeans are still too big, and I've got a lot of hard work to do yet before I can lock them away.

The perils of social eating

I am in a bit of a quandary today. For the first time since my diet began I will be going to a restaurant and eating out. Ordinarily I'd try to avoid doing so when I'm focused on losing weight, as you have less control on what you consume and are more likely to deviate from healthy food. However, this gathering of friends was organised some time ago and I'm not going to pull the plug now for the sake of a few calories.

Having browsed the online menu of our venue, I have to say it could be quite challenging to show restraint. The lighter options menu isn't particularly inspiring, and as someone who looks for value in their food, I take exception to being charged more for a little bit of crab and lettuce than it would be for a freshly prepared meaty pizza.

I'm expecting to be hit from all angles by the smelled of griddled steak, burgers, bacon, cheese, ribs and all sorts of wonderful things that I know should not be on my plate at the moment. It could make for an interesting couple of hours, particularly when I'll be surrounded by a group of people who won't necessarily be watching what they eat.

I'll update this article later on today to let you know how things go.

So, a few hours after the event, I have to say I've come through relatively unscathed. We went to Frankie and Benny's, a party of 12 comprising 8 adults and 4 children. I'd been studying the menu throughout the week trying to decide what to go for and was leaning towards a hot baked wrap. However, while walking to our table I saw one of these being delivered by one of the waitresses and was instantly put off. A wrap, filled with goodness knows what covered in what looked like a cheesy creamy sauce. No that was not for me.

As our order was taken I knew there would be platefuls of luscious stuff all around me but I wasn't deterred. Whereas others in the group had a rack of ribs, calzone, lamb shank or all-day breakfast, I plumped for the Sticky Pasta dish with chicken. I figured there was only so much damage this could do. Bit of pasta. Some mushrooms, roasted peppers and chicken. Obviously the sweet sticky hoi-sin sauce that made the meal wouldn't have been ideal, but I figured this was better option than something creamy like a carbonara or alfredo.

To be honest, I wasn't disappointed. A decent plate of food, and though I did look around the table with somewhat envious eyes, I didn't feel like I had missed out. Here is a photo of my meal.

Sticky Pasta Chicken at Frankie & Benny's
By contrast, some of the comments from my fellow diners were not so complimentary. My partner felt that her meal was quite salty, while the person who ordered this burger described it as 'ok'.

A burger. The side of chips, cheese and bacon looked pretty grim
After dinner was finished the inevitable question was asked about dessert. I did briefly skim through the menu and was greeted with words like waffle, cheesecake and sundae. My eyes diverted to the lighter options section which was made up of a couple of varieties of sorbet and pancake. Feeling pretty content with the pasta dish, I skipped dessert and watched my friends struggle to finish theirs. My wife wasn't terribly impressed with her Eton Mess, complaining about a lack of meringue content, and then proceeded to tell me on the drive home that she felt sick.

Eton Mess, more cream then meringue
So there we go. My first restaurant outing in 2013 and despite having the opportunity to stuff my face I declined the invitation. A brownie point for me and a small moral victory.

Time for some light relief

The last couple of posts have been a little bit on the serious side, so for today's article I think it is time to lighten the mood. So to get things started, here is a little picture to remind myself why I am doing this.

In my case, if only it was just at Christmas I got fat. Then it could be quickly worked off.

Here is a little picture for all you calorie counters out there - a scientific explanation of what is a calorie

Fortunately the calories seems to be undoing their best needlework, as my clothes are starting to feel a little bit looser. Just as well really, as I wouldn't want a repeat of what happened to me just before Christmas when I was checking my tyre pressures at a petrol station.

Ah yes, the classic signpost for recognising you've let yourself slip too far, when you bend down and your fat behind proves too strong for the seam of your trousers. That awful ripping noise made worse my the public nature of the event. Fortunately enough I was very close to a big supermarket with a clothing department and was able to purchase a cheap pair of jeans to cover my embarrassment.

Now, I positively advocate that to successfully diet, you need to eat three meals a day, and not try to cut corners by skipping breakfast or lunch here and there. It appears that I'm not the only person who thinks so as the following sign has been spotted recently in branches of Pret a Manger.

Wise words from the hungry gingerbread man, though as advertising campaigns go it is a little bit odd. Not sure I've ever had the 'pleasure' of eating at Pret, and having sneaked a look at their menu online I'm not sure they serve anything that I'd consider proper food anyway.

Last but by certainly no means least, we have news of the smart fork, which admonishes its user for eating too quickly or for putting too much in your mouth at once. So for those of us who are unable to self-restrain, we now have something other than Diane Abbott to intervene on our behalf!

You can read more about the 'happy fork' in this article
